Meditation

Meditation

Meditation has been around for over 5000 years in various forms and first gathered public interest in 1959 in the USA. By the end of the 1960's, thousands of people worldwide were practising different forms of meditation.

In early experiments doctors discovered that during meditation the metabolic rate is reduced by 16% in a matter of minutes. During sleep, the metabolic rate is usually reduced by only 12% over a period of many hours.

This means that meditation quickly provides a state of rest that is much deeper than sleep. These findings were made even more remarkable by the fact that the mind remains alert and aware during the rest, and there is no loss of consciousness as there is during sleep. This state is now referred to as restful alertness.

There are many things in life that are beyond our control. However, it is possible to take responsibility for and to change one's state of mind. According to Buddhism this is the most important thing we can do, and Buddhism teaches that it is the only real antidote to the anxiety, hatred, discontentedness, sleepiness, and confusions that beset the human condition.

Meditation is a means of transforming the mind. Buddhist meditation practices are techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivity, and a clear seeing of the true nature of things.

By engaging with a particular meditation practice one learns the patterns and habits of the mind, and the practice offers a means to cultivate new, more positive ways of being. With discipline and patience these calm and focused states of mind can deepen into profoundly tranquil and energised states of mind. Such experiences can have a transformative effect and can lead to a new understanding of life.

Health Benefits Of Meditation

The benefits of meditation are endless. You gain physically from the deep relaxation experienced by the body. Your ability to think clearly will improve as the techniques calm the mind, naturally alleviating stress and helping you to become more positive, precise and alert - a more concentrated person without having to concentrate.

The calming of the whole nervous system will benefit the bodily functions which normally absorb the stresses of life. These stresses can cause blockages in the energy flow within and surrounding our body, and in turn can create illness on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.

Meditation will help boost your Immune System and helps to produce the anti-bodies that fight off Flu and Cold Symptoms along with other viruses.

It has been reported that people newly trained in meditation have shown an increase in electrical activity in the left frontal part of the brain, an area associated with positive emotion and happiness. Meditation helps to stabilise blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure & decrease respiratory rate.

It helps to increases blood flow and slows the heart rate.

It leads to a deeper level of relaxation, reduces muscle tension, helps in chronic diseases like allergies, arthritis etc. and helps to alleviate headaches.

Meditation reduces emotional distress, reduces anxiety attacks by lowering the levels of blood lactate, and increases the serotonin production in the brain which influences mood and behaviour.

The lists of health benefits are endless and with the right tools, the right guidance and a little commitment, you too could feel the benefits both to your mental state and your health.

Forms Of Meditation

Having that quiet time in our lives is hard to get.

When I first started to meditate, just stopping my mind drifting off in to the mundane tasks that surrounded my day was an effort. In time and with help I am now able to leave my day behind me and find that deep relaxation that no amount of sleep will find.

Just finding 10 to 20 minutes each day to meditate, you will find huge improvements in your mind and health. It will enable you to cope with the everyday stresses of living in a fast paced, stressful and demanding world where multi-tasking is a thing of the norm.

If meditation is something you have never tried before but are interested in trying, then guided meditations is a good starting point. Being guided through beautiful surroundings, walking along that sandy beach, through your favourite wooded walkway or being guided to that quiet place, while learning how to breathe deeply will help you get in to a deep state of relaxation.

This will help train your mind to switch off from the everyday tasks and worries.

Meditation can also be used to get what you want out of life.

That clarity of thought in order to accomplish what you want, that deep understanding of who you are makes life a more manageable place to be. The shedding of those deep rooted problems like greed, sorrow, guilt and anger will bring new and wonderful things in to your life and also improve your health.

Spiritual Law states that what we project we get back. "What you sow is what you reap". So if we are full of anger, we will repeatedly find ourselves in situations where anger is directed back to us. If we feel that we are not worth the good things in life, then we constantly find ourselves surrounded by people that put on us in such a way that reflects that we are not worth it. If we wish ill health or misfortune on another, at some point that ill health or misfortune will come back at us.

Simple Meditation

Meditation is one of the great secrets in life. If you're not already someone who meditates, give yourself a gift and learn how. You'll relieve stress, study and work better, and wonder how you ever got along without it.

Here are a few very simple steps to get you started:

  • • Find a quiet place where you can be alone and undisturbed
  • • Sit upright on the floor or in a chair with both feet firmly planted on the floor
  • • Fold your hands with the tips of your thumbs touching lightly, or let your hands rest open and relaxed on your legs
  • • Close your eyes or focus softly on something about three feet in front of you on the floor
  • • Breathe deeply, and with every exhale, melt into the floor
  • • Focus on one image, one word, or a mantra. Some people use a candle flame, some a word that becomes a mantra. The idea is to focus your mind on one thing
  • • As other thoughts come into your mind, acknowledge them, let them go, and refocus your singular image or word

Learning to meditate can be frustrating in the beginning. Most of us are not used to controlling our thoughts. It takes practice. If you stick with it, you'll find that it becomes easier and easier to stay focused on one single thing. This is incredibly healing and quieting. In time, you will find that answers to troubles come easier during or after meditation.
